(Malar is pronounced like the word “color” with an M. The a’s make “uh” sounds.)

A transformative event in 2012 changed my life. Since then, my journey has led me to various healing modalities. I hold a psychology bachelor’s degree, ICF-approved NLP (neurolinguistic programming) coaching certification, and Reiki Level 2 certification.

Since 2008, I’ve worked with writers in every messy step of the creation process.

I teach expressive journaling as well as creative writing. Writing has long since been a way for me to process my feelings. I create and facilitate expressive journaling events for personal growth through my meetup Writing Journeys. I’ve taught writing workshops through a number of venues including:

  • Women’s Wellness Weekend at YMCA Camp Campbell
  • The Dancing Cat, a cat adoption lounge in San Jose where I volunteer
  • Women’s Healing Conference

As a practicing writer, I have written in many different forms. I am currently an active member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and my critique group supports my revision process.

I mentor youth in creative as well as academic writing through the nonprofit Society of Young Inklings, and have judged for the Inklings Book Contest in 2019 and 2020.

Reading has long been my fuel and stories my inspiration. Reading someone else’s story can unlock my own truth by mirroring back to me deeper universal truths. In the loneliest most desperate times, there’s always another story. The best feeling is reading words I could have written myself.

When I’m not reading, writing, or teaching, you’ll find me in the SF Bay Area tending to my plants, hiking, fawning over cats, and dreaming of swimming with wild dolphins.
